Comedian Hannibal Buress: More Than The Guy That Broke Cosby

Published on 07/24/2019

During a Philadelphia stand-up show in October 2014, Hannibal Buress made some jokes about Bill Cosby being known to abuse woman. He put on a fake Cosby voice saying, “Pull your pants up black people, I was on TV in the ’80s,” to which Buress responded in his own voice with, “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby. So turn the crazy down a couple of notches.” He encouraged audience members to Google Cosby’s name with the word ‘rape’ to see the overload of search results that turn up. As a short clip went viral and then the trial of Cosby ensued. Hannibal Buress became known as the comedian who broke Cosby. Apparently, Buress got tired of being praised for something he performed for six months prior. That’s okay because we’re here to talk about so much more.

Who Is Hannibal Buress?

Born in Chicago, this comedian began doing stand-up in 2002. He briefly worked as a writer for SNL and 30 Rock. Oh, if you’re wondering, he is NOT named for the cannibal Hannibal Lecter, but rather, after Hannibal Barca, a Carthaginian military commander. Now, Hannibal Buress has numerous credits to his name including movies like, The Nice Guys, Neighbors, the Baywatch remake and Spider-Man: Homecoming. In that 2017 Spider-Man movie, he played Coach Wilson. However, what stands out more than his role was that Buress paid a random guy to attend the premiere as him! Hilariously, the interviewer on the red carpet had no clue this wasn’t Hannibal and asked him about his role.

Hannibal Buress: Cohost On The Eric Andre Show And Podcast Host

Hannibal’s got this slow, almost monotone style to his comedy or maybe we’re just so used to seeing him as the polar opposite of Eric Andre on Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre Show. On Eric Andre’s anti-talk show comedy, Hannibal stands behind the guest, off to the side and provides this necessary calming force to Andre’s antics. Even if you’re not into the wild insanity that is The Eric Andre Show, you have to give them props for improvising! Besides, his co-hosting duties, Hannibal hosts his own podcast called The Handsome Rambler. On his podcast, you can hear him chat with stars about the most random things like books, wrestling, relationships or philosophy. As expected with Buress, it’s pretty unfiltered.

Now, on to what most know Hannibal Buress for…his hit role on Comedy Central’s Broad City. Acting alongside the talented women, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, Hannibal Buress plays a dentist named Lincoln. For most of his time on the show, he plays the boyfriend of Glazer’s character. Much like his persona on The Eric Andre Show, Lincoln is mellow but witty. My favorite thing about Lincoln has to be his pasta blog called ‘The Al Dente Dentist.’ Buress also hosted his own Comedy Central show called Why with Hannibal Buress, but didn’t return after the first season. He explained to the New York Post that the show, “wasn’t the ideal format for him.” Honestly, we think between all his other comedy pursuits, this talented man will be just fine leaving that show behind. Bottom line, if you haven’t checked out Hannibal Buress’ work, yet, what are you doing??
